FBI Busts Massive 'Pig-Butchering' Scam Ring Targeting Americans
By Jordan Reyes. Jun 3, 2026
An unprecedented international law enforcement operation has led to the arrest of at least 276 people and the dismantlement of nine criminal scam centers that targeted Americans – stealing millions of dollars through a psychological manipulation scheme that has driven victims to financial ruin and, in dozens of cases, to the edge of suicide.
What Is ‘Pig Butchering’?
The scheme is called “pig butchering” – a name that describes the slow, deliberate process scammers use to build trust with their targets before draining their savings.
It typically begins with a message that appears to come from a friendly stranger: someone met on a dating app, social media, or even by “wrong number” text. Over weeks or months, the scammer cultivates a genuine-feeling relationship. Then comes the pitch – a tip about a lucrative cryptocurrency investment.
The investment platform is fake. Every dollar the victim sends disappears into criminal hands.
The Scale of the Damage
The FBI’s Operation Level Up tracked these schemes across the United States and identified nearly 9,000 American victims. In 93 cases, victims were referred to FBI specialists for suicide intervention after losing everything.
Seventy-seven percent of those contacted said they did not even know they were being scammed when FBI agents first reached out.
The Global Crackdown
In a coordinated operation involving the FBI, Dubai Police, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, and Thai law enforcement, authorities arrested 275 suspects in Dubai and an additional fugitive in Thailand. Federal charges were unsealed in San Diego against six defendants – including nationals from Burma and Indonesia – who allegedly managed operations under names like “Sanduo Group” and “Giant Company.”
The scam centers operated across international borders, with victims’ money flowing through cryptocurrency networks designed to make tracing nearly impossible.
What Was Recovered
The FBI estimates that Operation Level Up has saved victims an estimated $562 million by intercepting fraud in progress and notifying potential victims before they could lose more.
But for those victimized before authorities intervened, the losses were devastating – retirement savings wiped out, life savings gone, families fractured.
How to Protect Yourself
The FBI urges Americans – especially older adults – to be deeply skeptical of unsolicited investment opportunities, particularly from people they have never met in person. Any platform promising guaranteed cryptocurrency returns that does not appear on mainstream financial exchanges should be treated as suspect.
If you believe you have been targeted, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
