James Harden, one of the most recognizable guards in the NBA, was arrested in Houston early Saturday on a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Harden, 36, has spent more than a decade as a league marquee name and now plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team he joined after stints with the Rockets, Nets and 76ers. Houston is home for Harden, who built his MVP-era reputation in the city, and the arrest happened blocks from the downtown core where he remains a familiar public figure. He was stopped at around 3:41 a.m. local time, according to records cited by ESPN and NBC News, an hour when the streets near 1800 Crawford Street were nearly empty.

What Officers Reported

Officers pulled Harden over for a traffic violation, according to the charging document. They reported that he was knowingly carrying a handgun outside of a holster and in plain view inside the vehicle, which under Texas law can support a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon. The charge is a misdemeanor, not a felony, and there was no report of anyone being threatened or injured during the stop. Harden was taken into custody and booked, then released a short time later.

The Charge and the Conditions

Harden was released on a $100 bond, and a hearing has been set for June 22, according to ESPN and Fox affiliates in Houston. As a condition of his release, he is barred from possessing any firearms, ammunition or other weapons, and from using alcohol or controlled substances unless prescribed. A misdemeanor unlawful-carry charge in Texas is a legal allegation that has not been tested in court, and Harden has not entered a plea. Neither Harden nor the Cavaliers had issued a detailed public statement on the arrest as of the initial reporting.

What the Calendar Holds

The next fixed point in the case is the June 22 hearing, where the misdemeanor charge will move forward in the Harris County court system. For now, the most concrete fact is the smallest one - a star who has filled arenas for fifteen years was booked, fingerprinted and released over a handgun in a parked car, on a charge that carries a $100 bond.
