Pastor Dies Hours Before Facing Wife's Murder Charge

By Jordan Reyes. Jun 29, 2026

A former Las Vegas youth pastor charged with murdering his wife two decades ago died this week, hours before he was due in court - a death authorities say was self-inflicted.

David Vander Meer, 49, was arrested June 22 and charged with murder and insurance fraud in the 2006 death of his then-wife, Bernadette Vander Meer, who fell from Angels Landing in Utah’s Zion National Park during what the couple called an anniversary hike.

A Deadly Hike, Ruled an Accident

Vander Meer told investigators at the time that he had turned away to move their backpacks when he heard his wife scream and saw she had fallen. Bernadette’s death was ruled accidental and the case was closed, though court records note investigators found the circumstances suspicious even then.

Insurance Money and a Lavish Life

Court documents allege Vander Meer raised the couple’s life insurance policies from $150,000 to a combined $600,000 just months before Bernadette’s death, then collected more than $567,000 after the claim was approved. Prosecutors say he spent much of it on vehicles and trips for romantic partners.

A Tip That Reopened Everything

The case sat closed for years until 2022, when a former member of Vander Meer’s youth group came forward, alleging he had used his position to groom kids, including a sexual relationship that began when she was 16. The investigation gained new urgency in 2025 after a senior pastor at his former church told authorities he believed Vander Meer had pushed Bernadette.

Bernadette’s parents, Richard and Laura Gudenkauf, said they had long suspected him. “Because of the girlfriend,” Laura told a local outlet, “I found insurance policies months later.”

Arrested, Then Gone

U.S. Marshals took Vander Meer into custody in Summerlin on June 22. He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Utah when, hours before Thursday’s hearing, he was treated for self-inflicted injuries and later pronounced dead. A judge informed the courtroom: “He’s not here, he’s deceased.”

The case against him, and the question of what really happened on that cliff, will now never be tested in court.
