Mail Carrier Killed Months After Losing Her Husband

By Taylor Bennett. Jun 29, 2026

A North Carolina mail carrier was kidnapped and shot to death while working her route Friday afternoon, just months after she lost her husband in a car accident, according to state investigators.

Brandi Reynolds, a United States Postal Service letter carrier, was found dead inside a vehicle in the Hays community of Wilkes County after deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a woman who had been shot. Officials say Reynolds had been restrained before she was killed.

A Suspect With a History

William Craig Durham, 56, of Roaring River, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. According to court filings, Durham is accused of restraining Reynolds and removing her from one location to another without her consent.

At Durham’s bond hearing, a family member told the judge he had previously threatened Reynolds and had broken into her home. Prosecutors detailed Durham’s record, which includes a prior assault conviction, past kidnapping charges, witness intimidation, and illegal firearm possession by a felon. He was denied bond.

A Second Loss in the Same Year

Reynolds’ husband, Brent, died in a car accident in December, leaving her to raise their two children alone. Her death less than six months later has compounded the grief for a family already in mourning, relatives say.

A Route She Walked Every Day

Neighbors along Reynolds’ route described her as a fixture in the community. “I always looked forward to seeing her vehicle come up around the driveway,” neighbor Julie Smith said, adding that the news has left her struggling to process it.

The National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association called Reynolds’ death “senseless” and said it should never have happened to someone serving her community.

What’s Next

Durham appeared in court Monday and remains held without bond. Investigators have not disclosed a motive or detailed the relationship, if any, between Durham and Reynolds. The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are continuing to investigate.
