A Royal Caribbean crew member who vanished during a stop in St. Kitts was found dead on the island’s dormant volcano after a search that stretched across several days.

The crew member was identified as Wang Zyuan, a Chinese national who worked in the restaurant department aboard Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas. He had come ashore while the ship was docked in port early that week, the kind of shore time that crew members use to see an island they otherwise only pass through. He set out alone on the popular trail that climbs to the summit of the island’s stratovolcano, and on May 27 he became lost on the mountain.

The Days of Searching

What followed was a sustained, multi-agency effort. Joint teams from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, the Police Training School, the Forest Unit, the Red Cross, a university K9 unit and community volunteers searched the mountain daily, according to reporting from cruise-industry outlets and CTV News. The terrain was steep and thickly forested, the kind of trail where a single wrong turn can leave a hiker disoriented for hours. On June 1, one of the search teams located his body.

What Is Known and What Is Not

Authorities confirmed the recovery but the reporting did not detail a cause of death, and there was no indication of foul play in the initial accounts. Wang had initially been described as a passenger before officials clarified that he was a member of the ship’s crew. His death is the kind that does not produce charges or a courtroom - only a recovery, an identification, and a family notified that a relative working far from home will not be coming back.

The Trail He Took

For the search teams who walked the volcano daily for nearly a week, the outcome was the one they had worked to avoid. The fact that holds is the simplest: a restaurant worker on a few hours of shore leave climbed a mountain trail alone, and a six-day search ended with his body found near the summit.
