8 Facts About the Original 'Bewitched'
By Marcus T.. Jul 25, 2024
From Samantha’s unforgettable nose twitch to Endora’s witchy antics, “Bewitched” captivated audiences with its enchanting blend of magic and humor. Join us as we explore eight interesting facts that showcase some of the magic behind the making of this iconic series.
1. The Original Darrin Left the Role Because of a Back Injury
Dick York, who played Darrin, suffered a severe back injury five years before being cast in the series. York never fully recovered, but he braved the pain to star in the series for the first five seasons. Eventually, York’s back pain and dependence on painkillers forced him to resign from the show.
2. Samantha and Endora’s Names Have Biblical Origins
In the Old Testament’s First Book of Samuel, there’s a story about a man named Saul seeking counsel from the “Witch of Endor,” hoping to communicate with Samuel, who was deceased. Samuel evolved into Samantha, and Endor became the inspiration for Endora.
3. The Color Green Was Used Frequently and Intentionally
If you have not noticed, the color green was prominent in the show. From the carpet at the Stephens’ house to emerald accents and even Montgomery’s outfits, green was frequently incorporated as it was seen as significant in witch folklore.

4. Marcia Brady Made Two Cameos
Actress Maureen McCormick appeared in two episodes before becoming the “it” girl of the Brady family. Once in a flashforward as Darrin and Samantha’s future child and again as Endora under a spell that altered her appearance to resemble a child.
5. The Stephens’ House Still Exists Today
While you won’t find it at 1164 Morning Glory Circle (the Stephens’ address on the show), the house still exists on the Warner Brother’s Ranch Studios. Unfortunately, the ranch isn’t open to the public.
6. Darrin and Endora Were Great Friends in Real Life
Despite their constant bickering on the show, Dick York and Agnes Moorehead had a great friendship. So much so that Moorehead was extremely disappointed when York departed after the fifth season.
7. Ratings Suffered Greatly When Dick York Left
The show went from number 11 to number 24 in the sixth season, which marked the departure of Dick York and the substitution of Dick Sargent for the character of Darrin.
8. Montgomery Was Part Owner of the Franchise
The actress tried to quit the sitcom after season five, the same season of York’s departure, but ABC apparently offered her so much money she couldn’t resist. By the time the show ended after season eight, Montgomery owned 20% of the show.
As we finish our journey through the magical world of “Bewitched,” we honor the legacy of a show that captured our hearts and sparked our imaginations.
