Can You Believe We Sent This to Space?
By Mia R.. Jul 25, 2024
Imagine finding a car, a disco ball, or even dinosaur bones floating in space! While this might sound like the plot of a quirky sci-fi movie, it’s real. Over the years, humans have launched some of the most bizarre objects into the cosmos, each with its own unique story.
Dinosaur Relics in Orbit
Among the curious items that have graced the void of space are fragments of our planet’s ancient inhabitants - dinosaur bones. In a blend of paleontology and aerospace innovation, nearly 200 fragments of dinosaur bones were launched into space by Blue Origin in 2021. These relics included parts of a Dromaeosaurus, a bird-like raptor that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. The bones, after their space journey, were returned to Earth and auctioned to support charity. This extraordinary mission not only highlighted the technological capabilities of modern rocketry, but also paid homage to the giants that once dominated our planet.

The Starman and His Tesla
In a display of technological prowess and marketing genius, SpaceX launched Elon Musk’s cherry-red Tesla Roadster into space in 2018, complete with a spacesuit-clad mannequin dubbed “Starman.” This peculiar cargo was not just for show; it was part of the test payload for the Falcon Heavy rocket’s maiden voyage. Today, this car orbits the sun, having traveled billions of miles beyond its warranty.
A Quick Escape From Earth
One of the most extraordinary feats was the accidental space an iron manhole cover, propelled by nuclear blasts during Operation Plumbbob in 1957. The cover, possibly the fastest human-made object ever, was shot into space at a speed five times the escape velocity of Earth, showcasing the unforeseen consequences of nuclear testing.
Presidential Locks and Other Memorabilia
Not all items sent to space are there by chance. Locks of hair from U.S. presidents like George Washington and Ronald Reagan were launched aboard Celestis’ Enterprise mission, adding a personal touch to space exploration. These historical artifacts accompany cremated remains, including those of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, making their final journey to the stars.
The Brightest of Them All
Perhaps one of the most visually striking objects ever sent into space was the Humanity Star. Launched by Rocket Lab in 2018, this giant, mirror-covered orb was designed to reflect sunlight back to Earth, creating a bright, flashing light visible from the ground. Although its mission was short-lived, the Humanity Star encouraged people to look up and consider their place in the universe.

Each bizarre item sent to space tells a story of human curiosity, creativity, and sometimes, sheer whimsy.
