Deranged Patient Attacks Woman in MS Hospital

On March 5, 2024, Wendy Gilbreath arrived at Merit Health Central in Jackson, Mississippi, seeking routine medical care. What should have been a simple visit turned into a nightmare, as she became the victim of a savage attack - a horrifying event that would ultimately cost her life.

An Unthinkable Assault in a Place of Healing

Gilbreath, 51, had stopped in Jackson while passing through the area. She was admitted to the sixth floor of Merit Health Central, the same floor as another patient, 36-year-old David Reed. The two had never met, but in a shocking turn of events, police say Reed suddenly grabbed Gilbreath by the neck and slammed her head into the floor multiple times.

Security responded quickly, and police arrested Reed at the hospital. Gilbreath was rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, but doctors couldn’t save her. She died the next day, just weeks before her 52nd birthday.

A Life Cut Short, but Not Forgotten

Gilbreath’s obituary described a woman who refused to let life’s challenges defeat her. A Texas native and Southern Methodist University graduate, she built a career in advertising and surrounded herself with people who adored her. Despite battling chronic illness, she lived with remarkable courage.

“While fighting challenging illnesses throughout her adult life, Wendy exhibited remarkable courage and stamina as she sought solutions,” her loved ones wrote, according to PEOPLE. “Wendy was truly an inspiration to those who witnessed her bravery every day. Wendy never gave up.”

Her family asked that donations in her memory go to a mental health foundation - an especially poignant request, given the circumstances of her death.

The Man Accused: A Long History of Mental Illness

In June 2024, a Hinds County grand jury indicted Reed for first-degree deliberate murder. However, the case hit a roadblock when a court-ordered evaluation determined that Reed lacked a rational understanding of the legal proceedings.

According to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger, forensic psychologist Dr. Laura Brodie described Reed as suffering from “delusional beliefs” and stated that while he understood the charges against him, he could not rationally participate in his own defense. Judge Adrienne Wooten ruled that Reed should be sent to Mississippi State Hospital for treatment to restore his competency.

Reed’s history of mental illness stretches back at least 16 years, according to court filings. Medical records show diagnoses of schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and a history of traumatic brain injury. His attorney, William Bell, has signaled an insanity defense, citing Reed’s extensive family history of psychiatric disorders - including a grandmother who disappeared from a Texas state hospital in the 1970s.

Hospital Security Under Scrutiny

The attack on Gilbreath raised urgent questions about patient safety. How did a psychiatric patient in crisis manage to launch such a violent assault? What protocols were – or weren’t - in place to prevent it?

Merit Health Central has been tight-lipped about changes in security. However, spokesperson Melanie McMillan told PEOPLE, “Maintaining the safety of our patients and staff is our priority and we continually review opportunities to strengthen our security processes and training.”

For now, Gilbreath’s loved ones remain in limbo. Reed’s case hinges on whether his competency can be restored - a process that could drag on for months or even years. The court will receive updates every four months on his progress, as reported by PEOPLE.
