Eldercare Worker Suspected in 22 Killings

Methodical and Ghastly

His method was calculating and cruel. Chemirmir would pose as a maintenance worker or health aide, and gain access to victims’ apartments. Once inside, he smothered his victims, sometimes with a pillow, sometimes by other means, before robbing them of jewelry and other valuables. The crimes flew under the radar, as the deaths were often misattributed to natural causes given the victims’ advanced ages.

A Daughter’s Instinct

For Shannon Dion, whose 92-year-old mother, Doris Gleason, was one of Chemirmir’s alleged victims, the journey for answers began on a Sunday morning in October 2016. What should have been a routine visit to her mother’s independent living apartment became a nightmare. Dion found her mother lifeless, her jewelry and cash missing.

Dion knew something was wrong when she noticed her mother’s Italian guardian angel pendant necklace was gone. However, authorities dismissed her suspicions at the time.

It wasn’t until two years later, when Chemirmir was arrested after an attack on 91-year-old Mary Bartel, that Dion’s fears were validated. Bartel survived her ordeal and provided police with a description of her assailant, leading investigators to reexamine numerous suspicious deaths in the Dallas area.

A Killer Caught

Chemirmir’s downfall came after police connected a discarded red jewelry box in a dumpster to the murder of 81-year-old Lu Thi Harris. Legal documents found inside led them to Harris’ home, where she was discovered smothered in her bedroom. Chemirmir’s arrest revealed a horrifying pattern of crimes.

In 2022, he was convicted of killing Harris and 87-year-old Mary Brooks. Prosecutors chose not to pursue the death penalty, reasoning that Chemirmir would spend the rest of his life behind bars. Still, families of his alleged 22 victims were left grappling with the emotional fallout.

Jailhouse Justice

In September 2023, Chemirmir’s story took an unexpected turn when he was found dead in his East Texas prison cell, the victim of an apparent homicide at the hands of his cellmate, according to Today. The news evoked mixed reactions from the families of his alleged victims.

“My mother died in fear,” said Dion, as reported in Today. “This man did not have a peaceful passing. There’s some relief in feeling that he didn’t get off easily.”

Dan Probst, nephew of victim Catherine Sinclair, struggled to reconcile feelings of shock and relief at the death of Chemirmir. “This was jailhouse justice,” Probst said.

The prison incident highlighted the systemic failures that allowed Chemirmir to operate undetected for so long. His death left unanswered questions about the 20 other cases prosecutors had dismissed, leaving grieving families to wonder if they would ever see full accountability.

A Legacy of Reform

In the wake of these tragedies, families of Chemirmir’s alleged victims formed Secure Our Seniors, a nonprofit advocating for stricter regulations in independent living facilities. Their mission is to ensure that no other families experience the heartbreak of losing loved ones to preventable crimes.
