Florida Man Dies After Argument Over a Plate of Food
By Jennifer A.. Mar 17, 2025
A family dinner turned deadly in Melbourne, Florida, when a 19-year-old allegedly killed his father during a heated argument over food. What started as a squabble about who deserved a plate of food escalated into a physical altercation that ended in tragedy.
A Dinner Dispute Gone Wrong
According to police reports, Julien Welch-Beddoe was preparing a meal on the evening of Jan. 19, 2025, when his father, 45-year-old Francis Welch, intervened. Welch reportedly told his son that he didn’t deserve to eat because he wasn’t working. Welch-Beddoe, undeterred, continued making his plate until his father pushed him. That’s when things took a violent turn.

From Heated Words to Deadly Blows
Police say Welch-Beddoe reacted by putting his father in a headlock and delivering two or three punches to his ribs, as reported by PEOPLE. The struggle ended up on the floor before Welch’s fiancée managed to separate them. At first, the situation seemed to de-escalate. Welch-Beddoe reportedly released his father, assuming he was fine. But about five minutes later, his father’s fiancée screamed, “This isn’t a joke!” as reported by PEOPLE.
Welch was found unresponsive on the couch, head tilted back, pale and struggling to breathe. Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but by 1 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2025, he had succumbed to his injuries. The medical examiner later confirmed that Welch suffered from three broken ribs and a lacerated spleen, which led to fatal internal bleeding.

Alcohol, Arrests, and Aftermath
Toxicology reports revealed that Welch had a staggering 0.391 blood alcohol content at the time of the altercation - nearly five times the legal driving limit. Meanwhile, his son was reportedly sober.
Authorities charged Welch-Beddoe with manslaughter and arrested him on Feb. 5, 2025, the Miami Herald reports. He has pleaded not guilty, with bail set at $50,000 on the condition that he has no contact with his father’s relatives. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 25, 2025.

A Case That Raises Questions
This tragic case leaves many questions unanswered. Was this an unfortunate accident, or did emotions spiral out of control in a household already on edge? The legal system will ultimately decide Welch-Beddoe’s fate, but regardless, this was a dinner dispute with the most tragic of consequences.
