A former NFL® player, Gosder Cherilus, has recently found himself in legal trouble after a bizarre incident aboard a Delta Air Lines® flight. Cherilus, known for his time as an offensive tackle in the NFL, was arrested for disorderly conduct after allegedly urinating on a fellow passenger during a Delta flight from Boston to Dublin.
Who Is Gosder Cherilus?
Gosder Cherilus, 40, is a retired NFL player who had a notable career as an offensive tackle. After playing college football at Boston College, Cherilus was drafted by the Detroit Lions® in 2008. He spent five seasons with the Lions before moving to the Indianapolis Colts® and later the Tampa Bay Buccaneers®. Cherilus retired from professional football in 2016.
Cherilus’ Mid-Air Mayhem
Delta Flight 154 was more than three hours behind schedule when it took off from Boston Logan International Airport at 12:12 a.m. on Aug. 18, 2024, on its way to Dublin, Ireland. According to court documents and reports from Massachusetts State Police, Cherilus, who had been drinking before boarding, became increasingly disruptive during the flight.
About an hour into the journey, Cherilus got up from his seat and proceeded to urinate on an elderly woman seated nearby. The act reportedly lasted around 20 seconds, during which Cherilus fully exposed himself. The flight crew and other passengers attempted to intervene, but Cherilus’ erratic behavior continued as he returned to his seat and then struck an elderly man during a subsequent confrontation over seating arrangements.
Authorities on the ground were forced to respond when the flight returned to Boston at 2:33 a.m. Due to his size and resistance, Cherilus was reportedly difficult to control. It took four officers to escort him off the plane in handcuffs after he refused to cooperate with the commands.
Personal and Legal Repercussions
In the aftermath of the incident, Cherilus issued a public apology. He attributed his behavior to the effects of a sleeping medication that he took in preparation for the delayed flight. “In preparation for the unexpected overnight flight, I took a sleeping medication that I don’t normally use, which resulted in behavior that is not representative of my character,” Cherilus explained on social media, according to USA TODAY. “I would like to apologize to the passengers and flight crew.”
Despite his apology, Cherilus faces serious legal consequences. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of disorderly conduct, disturbing a flight crew, and resisting arrest. The incident not only caused a significant disruption for passengers but also led to a delay and the diversion of the flight back to Boston.
Delta’s ‘Zero Tolerance’ Response
Delta Air Lines responded to the incident by emphasizing their strict policy against unlawful behavior. A Delta spokesperson stated, “Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement to that end. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel,” according to USA TODAY.
The disruption affected all passengers on board, some of whom were reassigned to another flight to Dublin later that day. The incident has drawn considerable media attention, reflecting the broader issues of passenger conduct and airline policies.
Gosder Cherilus’ behavior on Delta Flight 154 demonstrates how a single passenger’s actions can profoundly disrupt a flight and lead to significant delays and inconveniences for all passengers and crew.
As Cherilus faces legal consequences and navigates the fallout from this incident, his case serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of maintaining order in the skies. Moving forward, Cherilus will need to address the legal ramifications of his actions - while the aviation industry continues to refine its policies to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
