Gabby Petito's Parents Reveal What Happened to Her Van
By Ashley S.. Mar 11, 2025
Gabby Petito’s story gripped the nation in 2021 when the 22-year-old travel blogger vanished during a cross-country road trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. After weeks of uncertainty, her body was found in Wyoming, and authorities determined she had been strangled. Laundrie, the sole suspect, later died by suicide in Florida, leaving behind a notebook admitting responsibility. Now, more than three years later, Petito’s parents have revealed what they did with one of the most haunting symbols of the case: the van she and Laundrie traveled in.
Petito’s Parents Destroy the Van
In an interview, Gabby’s father, Joe Petito, explained the family decided to crush the Ford Transit Connect that had been a central part of her journey.
“We didn’t want the van to be out there and someone owning the van and then saying, ‘Here's the van that Gabby was …’ So, we had it crushed,” he told NewsNation.
The family feared the vehicle, which had become widely recognized due to Gabby’s social media posts and the intense media coverage of her disappearance, could become a disturbing collector’s item. Rather than allow that to happen, they chose to destroy it.
The Pieces They Kept
Although the van is gone, the Petito family held onto a few sentimental items. Gabby’s stepmother, Tara Petito, shared that they kept the gas cap and a sticker from the Great Smoky Mountains, one of the many places Gabby visited on her road trip.
These small pieces now serve as quiet reminders of Gabby’s adventurous spirit, preserved by her family in a curio case at home.
Turning Grief Into Action
Since Gabby’s murder, her parents have focused on advocating for domestic violence awareness and missing persons cases. They founded the Gabby Petito Foundation, which works with organizations like the Black and Missing Foundation and the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
“Gabby’s story spread like wildfire across the globe, we knew immediately we had to turn this tragedy into meaningful purpose,” the Gabby Petito Foundation website states. It continues, “The mission of the foundation is to address the needs of organizations that support locating missing persons and to provide aid to organizations that assist victims of domestic violence situations, through education, awareness, and prevention strategies.”
Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, has also spoken about finding a sense of peace. In a recent interview, she revealed she has forgiven Laundrie for what he did. “I have forgiven Brian, and I know that’s what Gabby would have wanted, and I’m moving forward so that I can help people," Nichole Schmidt told NewsNation.
Gabby’s Legacy Lives On
An anonymous survivor wrote on the Gabby Petito Foundation blog: “The way people, especially women, came together for Gabby was something hopeful and brilliant. … When I hear Gabby’s name now, I think of a young woman smiling, laughing, hiking, barefoot, being free. I believe her being here was a miracle. I really, truly believe she has saved, and will save, countless lives.”
While the van is no longer on the road, its significance remains. It was once a symbol of adventure, later became a painful reminder of tragedy, and is now a representation of a family’s strength and determination to make a difference.
