Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa's Cause of Death Revealed

Hackman and Arakawa Died a Week Apart

On Feb. 26, authorities discovered Hackman’s body in a mudroom, fully clothed with a pair of sunglasses lying nearby. In contrast, Arakawa was found in an open bathroom near a space heater, with her body showing alarming signs of mummification and decomposition. The circumstances surrounding their death initially puzzled authorities, but they have now confirmed that Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, both died of natural causes, but not at the same time.

Arakawa, 65, died first after contracting hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare and severe respiratory illness caused by exposure to infected rodents. Her final known movements were recorded on February 11, when she visited a farmers market, a pharmacy, and a pet store before returning home.

Hackman, who had advanced Alzheimer’s disease, died about a week later on February 18 from coronary artery disease. Due to his condition, authorities believe he may not have even realized that his wife had passed away in their home days earlier.

A Mystery Finally Solved

The deaths of Hackman and Arakawa initially baffled authorities. With no signs of foul play, carbon monoxide poisoning, or external injury, investigators had to rely on medical records and Hackman’s pacemaker data to establish a timeline. The final report from the New Mexico medical examiner has now ruled out any suspicious circumstances.

While their deaths were unrelated, the tragic sequence of events added to the confusion surrounding the case.

Remembering a Hollywood Legend

Hackman is remembered as one of the greatest actors of his generation. A two-time Academy Award winner, Hackman earned Oscars for his roles in films such as “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” After a long and celebrated career, Hackman retired from acting in the early 2000s and moved to Santa Fe, where he sought a quieter life. Arakawa, a classical pianist, had been his wife since 1991, and together they built a private, art-inspired life away from Hollywood’s glare.

The impact of Hackman’s passing has resonated beyond Santa Fe. As reported by USA Today, Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber shared his sentiments: “He’s a global superstar and a part of Santa Fe’s local community. He’s a horrible villain and a really decent human being. I think that’s why … the response to his death is so strong, because he connects across these different boundaries, and not everybody can do that.”

A Sad Conclusion to a Puzzling Case

With the official findings now released, the mystery surrounding their deaths has been resolved. The tragic reality is that Arakawa’s sudden illness claimed her life, and Hackman, unaware of her passing, died alone days later. The case that once left investigators searching for answers has now come to a heartbreaking but clear conclusion.
