Postal Worker Killed for 'Cutting' Line at Harlem Deli
By Robert W.. Feb 7, 2025
A lunchtime stop at a Harlem deli turned deadly in a shocking act of violence that left a U.S. Postal Service worker dead. The fatal stabbing, which took place in broad daylight, has left a community in disbelief and raised questions about how a seemingly ordinary encounter could escalate so quickly.
A Violent Encounter Over a Sandwich
A routine lunch break took a tragic turn when a U.S. Postal Service worker was fatally stabbed inside a Harlem deli on Jan. 2, 2025. Ray Hodges, 36, a Bronx resident and devoted father, lost his life in an incident that has left the community grappling with shock and disbelief.
The altercation began around 2:38 p.m. at Joe’s Deli Grocery, when Hodges, who was on his postal route, stopped to place an order. Witnesses say tensions flared after Jaia Cruz, 24, became upset over whose turn it was to order. According to a deli employee, the disagreement escalated when Cruz grew angry that Hodges placed his order first, as reported by NBC News.
Janet Rich, a customer at the deli, told The New York Daily News that the confrontation turned physical when Cruz spat in Hodges’ face. Hodges allegedly responded by throwing a plastic bottle, prompting Cruz to pull out a knife and stab him multiple times in the chest, neck, and arms.
Police arrived to find Hodges on the floor in his uniform. He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where he was pronounced dead.
The Arrest of Jaia Cruz
After the stabbing, Cruz fled to her nearby Harlem apartment. NYPD officers tracked her down and arrested her at approximately 10 p.m. that evening. She has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to Hodges’ death.
Footage from her arrest shows Cruz being escorted in handcuffs to an unmarked police vehicle while reporters shouted questions she did not respond to, including whether the argument was truly over a sandwich.
Mourning a Dedicated Worker and Father
Ray Hodges, who worked as a postal worker assigned to Manhattan, is remembered as a hard worker and loving father. Ray’s brother described him to PEOPLE as “an honorable man” who “took care of his family and everybody,” while longtime friend Flip Morales called him “amazing person” who “was always a working man.” Morales added, “He was trying to just make some money. That’s it. Just getting up doing what you gotta do to provide for his kids and his family.”
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service issued a statement confirming Hodges’ identity and expressing its commitment to working with law enforcement. “The Postal Inspection Service takes matters involving the safety and well-being of postal service employees as a top priority,” the statement read according to NBC News.
A Community in Shock
The tragic loss of Ray Hodges has left the Harlem community shaken. Residents have questioned how a minor dispute could escalate into such deadly violence. Meanwhile, Hodges’ family and friends are left mourning a man who was known for his kindness and dedication to his family and work.
The investigation into the fatal stabbing continues, and Cruz is expected to face trial in the coming months. This tragic incident is a stark reminder of how senseless acts of violence can devastate lives and communities in an instant.
