How to Survive a Tornado
By Melissa M.. Jul 25, 2024
Tornadoes are powerful and unpredictable forces of nature that can strike with little warning, causing widespread destruction and endangering lives. Knowing how to stay safe during a tornado can mean the difference between life and death.
1. Find a Safe Shelter
The safest place during a tornado is indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. Ideally, find a basement or storm shelter. If neither is available, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of your home, such as a bathroom or closet, and cover yourself with a mattress or heavy blankets.

2. Avoid Windows and Get Low
Windows can shatter due to high winds and debris, so it’s crucial to stay as far away from them as possible. Go to the lowest floor in your house and put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Underground spaces, like basements, offer the best protection.
3. Take Action if Caught in a Vehicle
If you are driving when a tornado approaches, do not seek shelter under an overpass. Instead, try to get inside a safe building to shelter.
Surprisingly, staying in your vehicle can be more dangerous than being outside, as it can be thrown by the tornado’s winds. In a pinch, exit the vehicle, find a low-lying area such as a ditch or culvert, and lie flat, covering your head with your hands.

4. Protect Your Head and Body
Flying debris poses a significant threat during a tornado. If you have one available, wearing a helmet can provide crucial protection against head injuries. Additionally, put on sturdy shoes to protect your feet from sharp debris if you need to move around after the storm.
5. Plan for Your Pets
Don’t forget to include your pets in your tornado safety plan. Keep them on a leash or in a carrier and bring them with you to your shelter. Ensure their collars are secure with identification tags in case they get lost during the chaos.
6. Know the Correct Warning Signs and Terminology
Understanding the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning can help you act quickly. A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while a Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar and you should take cover immediately. A Tornado Emergency is the rarest and is for the more extreme situations when there is a severe threat to life.
Surviving a tornado requires preparation, quick thinking, and knowing where to seek shelter. By following these safety tips, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from the devastating effects of these violent storms. Stay safe and stay informed.
