Mother's Love Brought Her Daughter Back After 5 Years in a Coma
By Gary P.. Jul 25, 2024
Imagine being in a coma for five years, with the world telling your loved ones to give up hope. Now imagine waking up from that coma, against all odds, because of one person’s unwavering belief in you. This is the story of Jennifer Flewellen, a woman who defied medical statistics and the skepticism of many, thanks to the relentless love and care of her mother, Peggy Means.
The Accident and the Aftermath
On a seemingly ordinary day in September 2017, Jennifer Flewellen’s routine drive to work turned tragic when she veered off the road and crashed into a pole. The accident left her paralyzed and in a medically-induced coma. Doctors were pessimistic about her chances of survival, much less recovery.
In an interview with ABC News, Means recalled “They encouraged me, by like day two or three to take her off [life support].” Despite the grim prognosis, Means chose to fight for her daughter’s life, a decision marking the beginning of a long and arduous journey.
Maintaining Hope Against the Odds
Over the next five years, Flewellen was transferred to various hospitals and care facilities, with Means tirelessly advocating for her daughter’s care at every step. Means’s determination faced numerous challenges, from securing insurance coverage for Flewellen’s care to battling negative attitudes from some medical staff. “I remember one respiratory nurse, she told me, ‘Well, you know, she’ll only get worse,’ and I told her, ‘Don’t you ever say that to me again, and never say it around my daughter,’” Means stated.
A Mother’s Loving Care
Means visited Flewellen nearly every day, talking to her as if she were awake, sharing news about her sons, and even giving her “spa days” to make her feel cared for. This dedication extended beyond physical care; it was a testament to Means’s belief in her daughter’s presence and potential to recover. “I always felt as though she was in there. I just felt it. But no, she didn’t acknowledge me,” Means shared about the years before Flewellen showed signs of improvement.
The Turning Point
The breakthrough came in August 2022 when, during one of their outdoor visits, Flewellen laughed at a joke, marking her first sign of consciousness in five years. This moment of joy was a turning point, leading to small but significant signs of recovery. Flewellen began to respond to questions and, with the help of speech therapy, started to communicate again. “It’s incredible,” Means said, reflecting on her daughter’s progress from making small sounds to spelling and remembering details from her past.
Defying the Odds
Flewellen’s journey from a persistent vegetative state to regaining consciousness and communication is a rare medical occurrence. ABC News reports that Dr. Ralph Wang, a physiatrist who cared for Flewellen, noted, “Just 2% to 3% of patients may come out of their coma,” making Flewellen’s case extraordinary. Her recovery highlights not only her resilience but also the significant role that a loved one’s support and advocacy can play in the healing process.
As Flewellen continues her journey towards further recovery, her story serves as an inspiration to many, showing that even in the face of overwhelming odds, determination and love can lead to miraculous outcomes.
“Jenn had a nurse practitioner once that said, ‘You have to imagine it, you have to dream it and you have to believe it,’” Means said. “And so that’s what we’ve tried to do.”
