The Texas Case That Still Haunts Investigators
By Maria W.. Aug 21, 2024
A shadowy figure in tactical gear, gripping a hammer and moving with an unsettling gait, prowls the halls of a small-town Texas church in the pre-dawn hours of April 18, 2016. This security footage image, now familiar to many who knew and loved Missy Bevers, should hold the key to the identity of her killer. But eight years after that fateful morning, Bevers’ murder remains unsolved.
The Victim
Bevers, a 45-year-old mother of three daughters and wife to Brandon Bevers, called Red Oak, Texas, home, just east of Midlothian. Once a dedicated special education teacher, she had shifted her focus to inspiring others through fitness. On the day of her tragic death, Bevers was to lead a Camp Gladiator boot camp class at Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian. She arrived at the church around 4:30 a.m.
When Bevers’ students arrived, they discovered her lifeless body inside the church, having suffered fatal injuries to her head and chest. Additionally, video evidence captured a silver vehicle in the vicinity before the tragedy unfolded. Despite these critical clues, the police have yet to identify the perpetrator.

The Mysterious Suspect
Thirty minutes before Bevers arrived at the church that morning, surveillance footage revealed a figure clad in SWAT-like tactical gear vandalizing church property. In an effort to identify this individual, investigators released the video, hoping someone might recognize the distinctive way the person moved.
The individual walked with their feet turned outward and with a pronounced reliance on the right foot. Experts estimated the suspect’s height, including their headwear, to be around 5-foot-8. Authorities were particularly interested in individuals who match this height and exhibit a similar walk, or who might have had a similar gait at the time of Bevers’ murder. Police acknowledge the unique walk could have been due to a temporary condition.
The interior surveillance cameras captured the suspect using a pry bar to break a glass window and force open a side door at the church, which lacked an alarm system. Unfortunately, the external surveillance cameras were not functioning at the time. The police have yet to determine the suspect’s gender from the video.

Suspicious Vehicle Caught on Tape
Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured a vehicle in the parking lot in the hours leading up to Bevers’ death. Investigators identified the car as either a 2010-2012 Nissan Altima or a 2010-2012 Infiniti G37. The footage showed the vehicle moving slowly around the lot while flashing its lights on and off. After a brief stop, the driver exited the parking lot.
The Case Grows Cold
Over the years, detectives have diligently interviewed and re-interviewed witnesses, extending their search beyond state lines and even internationally. Despite their relentless efforts, the case remains unsolved, with no significant breakthroughs to report. In 2021, Midlothian police said investigators have disclosed much of the case’s details, including the critical surveillance footage of a person in tactical gear inside the church on the morning Bevers was killed. But police also noted that certain pieces of evidence remain confidential, preserved for potential future use when an arrest is eventually made.
8-Year Anniversary
The Midlothian community marked the 8-year anniversary by gathering to honor Bevers’ memory with a heartfelt vigil, ensuring that her legacy continues to shine brightly. Police say the investigation into Bevers’ murder remains active and ongoing. Since the tragic event, the department has fielded over 3,000 tips from the public.
