Rediscovery in Florida

In 2023, the watch surfaced at Blackwell Auctions in Clearwater, Florida. Edwin Bailey, the auction house owner, recognized the significance of the inscription bearing Roosevelt’s name but had no documentation to confirm its authenticity. To verify its history, Bailey contacted the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site and the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site. Both institutions confirmed the watch’s authenticity.

The FBI’s Involvement

Shortly before the watch was set to be auctioned, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents visited Bailey, revealing that the National Park Service and the FBI had been searching for the watch since its theft. The watch was recovered and returned to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, where it would once again be on public display.

The Watch’s Historical Significance

Though the watch itself was not particularly valuable, its historical significance was immense. Roosevelt carried it during pivotal moments, including the Spanish-American War and his travels across Africa and the Amazon. The watch symbolized his adventurous spirit and connection to his family.
