TSA Blunders Let Stowaway Fly Across the Atlantic
By Gary P.. Jan 10, 2025
In a recent story that reads like a movie plot, Svetlana Dali, a 57-year-old Russian-born U.S. resident, managed to sneak onto a Delta Air Lines® flight from New York to Paris without a ticket or a passport. The incident has not only raised eyebrows but also serious questions about airport security protocols at one of the busiest travel hubs in the world.
A Bold Move Through JFK
On Nov. 26, during the Thanksgiving travel rush, Dali arrived at JFK Airport in New York and, within minutes, attempted to access a security line without a boarding pass. Turned away, she didn’t give up. She blended in with a group of Air Europa flight crew members to pass through a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint. Despite the obvious gap in protocol, she was screened for prohibited items and allowed to proceed.

Dali then made her way to the Delta Air Lines gate for Flight 264 to Paris. As agents assisted legitimate passengers, Dali slipped past them unnoticed and boarded the fully booked flight. Once aboard, she avoided detection for most of the seven-hour journey by frequently switching between lavatories, as reported by CNN.

Her presence remained a secret until the flight was nearing Paris. A crew member noticed she did not have a seat and asked for her boarding pass, which she couldn’t produce. The airline alerted French authorities, who detained Dali upon landing.
A Troubled Journey Back
French authorities quickly deemed Dali ineligible to enter France and ordered her return to the United States. However, her deportation proved anything but straightforward. On her first attempt to board a Delta flight back to New York, she was removed after causing a disturbance. Another attempt days later also failed when Delta refused to transport her.

Eventually, she was escorted back to the U.S. on Dec. 6, flanked by French security officers. Upon arrival, she was arrested by FBI agents and charged with “secreting aboard a vessel,” as reported by The New York Times, a federal offense that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Who Is Svetlana Dali?
Dali’s background adds another layer of intrigue to the story. Records indicate she once lived in Philadelphia and had filed lawsuits alleging she was the victim of chemical weapons and a kidnapping plot. In court, her attorney, Michael Schneider, described the charge against her to The New York Times as minor, akin to “turnstile hopping,” but prosecutors emphasized the serious security breach her actions exposed.
Dali’s motivations remain unclear, though she admitted to investigators that she had attempted to stow away at multiple airports, including a February 2024 incident at Miami International Airport where she tried to access a secure arrivals area and bypass customs to reach the planes. She also claimed to have been poisoned while detained in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, further deepening the mystery surrounding her actions and mental state.
Airport Security Under Scrutiny
This incident has sparked alarm among aviation and security experts. “This was a lot of failures in one day,” said Mary Schiavo, former inspector general for the U.S. Department of Transportation told CNN. While the TSA claimed Dali was screened and carried no prohibited items, Schiavo bluntly remarked, “She was the big prohibited item.”

Delta Air Lines and the TSA have both launched reviews of their security procedures. Delta attributed the breach to a “deviation from standard procedures,” as reported by CNN, but has yet to specify what went wrong. Aviation analysts are calling for greater scrutiny, with Schiavo labeling the breach a “wake-up call” for the airline industry.
Where Is She Now?
Judge Joseph Marutollo ordered Dali to live in Philadelphia with a church acquaintance who agreed to house her. She must avoid airports, wear a GPS monitor, surrender travel documents, remain in the area, follow a curfew, and undergo mental health evaluation and treatment as required.
The saga of Svetlana Dali is almost too wild to believe - and so far this stowaway’s audacious journey has raised more questions than answers. It’s a tale of loopholes, luck, and one woman’s unbelievable bid for the skies.
