Urinal Crushes Man to Death, Family Demands Answers
By Robert W.. Feb 26, 2025
Public restrooms are designed for convenience, but for one London maintenance worker, a routine repair ended in tragedy. Kevin Holding, a 60-year-old father of three, was crushed to death while repairing a pop-up urinal in the city’s busy West End. The shocking incident has left his family devastated and searching for answers, as investigators work to determine what went wrong.
A Routine Repair Turns Tragic
Kevin Holding, a 60-year-old maintenance engineer from Beckenham, England, was killed on Jan. 27, 2023, when a hydraulic urinal collapsed on him at Cambridge Circus, near the Palace Theatre. Kevin, an employee of Hi-tech Washroom Solutions Limited, was performing routine maintenance when the structure suddenly gave way, trapping him below street level.
Emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics, and an air ambulance, arrived within minutes, but it took nearly two hours for a crane to lift the heavy device. Despite their efforts, Kevin was pronounced dead at the scene. His cause of death was later confirmed as compression asphyxia.
According to the Daily Mail, a London Fire Brigade spokesperson stated, “A man was trapped below street level underneath a hydraulic urinal. Firefighters worked with partner agencies and used a winch to free him.”
How Did This Happen?
More than a year after the accident, the exact cause of the urinal’s collapse remains unknown, leaving Kevin’s family struggling for answers. His daughter Karlie Holding expressed her anger over the lack of information, calling it “disgusting” and “disrespectful,” according to BBC News.
The Metropolitan Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have been investigating the incident, but no definitive explanation has been provided as to why the urinal collapsed. Karlie told BBC News, “We haven’t got closure, we haven’t been able to mourn properly, close that chapter and live our lives in memory of Dad and build our family back up.”
What’s a Pop-Up Urinal?
Pop-up urinals were introduced in central London in 2002 to combat street urination. These hydraulic toilets remain hidden underground during the day and rise at night for public use. While they provide a practical solution for nightlife areas, the safety concerns surrounding their maintenance have now come under scrutiny following Kevin’s death.

A Grieving Family Left Without Answers
Kevin’s family remains in deep grief, struggling with the unanswered questions surrounding his death. “The family as a whole just hasn’t been the same at all: we’re a very broken family,” Karlie told BBC News. The delays in the investigation have made it even harder for them to move forward.
The Metropolitan Police have apologized for the prolonged inquiry, acknowledging that it has taken longer than expected to receive necessary reports. Dean Purvis from the Met Police stated, as quoted by BBC News, “We are sorry for the impact this is having on everyone in Mr. Holding’s family.”
An Isolated but Devastating Incident
While Kevin’s case is the first widely reported fatal incident involving a pop-up urinal, his death has drawn attention to the potential risks of these hydraulic devices. But there are no widely documented cases of similar fatalities. Kevin’s death remains under investigation, and his family is still searching for answers about why the urinal collapsed.
As the investigation continues, Kevin’s loved ones remain in limbo, waiting for justice and the answers they deserve. “We’re still in this grey zone where we have no idea what happened, how he lost his life, so we can’t put that to rest,” Karlie told BBC News. Until more information is revealed, the family continues to grieve, their lives put on hold by a tragedy that should never have happened.
