Utah Boy, 7, Drives Sister to McDonald's® for Happy Meal®

A Sunday morning in Utah turned into something out of a video game - but this wasn’t make-believe. A 7-year-old boy got behind the wheel of his mother’s SUV and drove himself and his younger sister 10 miles through city streets, all in search of fast-food.

A Joyride That Raised Alarms

It was just after 8 a.m. on April 27 in Ogden, Utah, when police reportedly began receiving calls about a reckless driver. Several 911 reports described a white SUV swerving across lanes, barely staying on the road - and the person behind the wheel, callers said, looked suspiciously like a child.

When Ogden police officers caught up to the vehicle, they initially prepared for a standard traffic stop. But after recognizing that the driver was indeed a child, they made a quick and cautious decision - they stopped their pursuit, prioritizing the safety of the young passengers and the public.

The SUV ultimately came to a halt when it veered into a parking strip. Officers found both the 7-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister unharmed near the vehicle.

The Reason? A Craving

What prompted the miniature road trip? According to the children’s mother, Whitney Bush, the answer was startling in its simplicity - the boy was hungry and wanted McDonald’s^®. Specifically, a Happy Meal^®.

In an interview with local station ABC4, Bush said she woke up that morning, checked on her four children, and went back to bed. When police later knocked on her door to inform her that two of her kids - and her SUV - had been located in a neighboring city, she was floored.
“I absolutely had my heart in my stomach … I had no idea what was going on,” she told the outlet.

No Charges, But Consequences

While the 7-year-old is not facing legal charges due to his age, Bush said the family is treating the incident seriously. The boy will be doing community service around the neighborhood - a consequence she hopes will make a lasting impression.

“I’m not proud of him by any means,” Bush said, according ABC4, “He’s in a world of trouble, he’s probably grounded for the rest of his life.”

The family SUV, now sitting in a tow yard, may be damaged, but the children’s safety remains the main concern. According to Bush, her son had the money ready for his Happy Meal and even remembered to wear his seatbelt. He reportedly passed several McDonald’s restaurants on his 10-mile route from Clearfield to Ogden, focused solely on reaching one he had in mind.

Behavioral Background and Parental Challenges

Bush shared that her son has exhibited behavioral issues in the past, but never anything to this extent. As a single mother, she said she’s tried reaching out for help - from hospitals, law enforcement, and child services - but has struggled to find support due to his age.

The boy’s fascination with driving isn’t entirely out of nowhere. “He’s got a family full of truck drivers. He’s gonna be a truck driver someday, that’s what he wants to do,” Bush explained to ABC4. “I told him it’s not gonna be today, he’s gotta wait.”

Fortunately, no one was injured. But the outcome could have been drastically different. The incident underscores the importance of keeping car keys out of reach and maintaining conversations with kids about boundaries and safety.
