Betsy Arakawa, 65, was last seen on Feb. 11, 2025, captured on surveillance footage at a Sprouts grocery store and a pet food shop in Santa Fe. She appeared calm but cautious, wearing a mask and gloves - signs she may have been feeling unwell. That same day, she emailed her therapist to cancel a Feb. 12 session “out of an abundance of caution,” as reported by the New York Post, noting that Hackman, 95, had developed cold or flu-like symptoms, though he had tested negative for COVID.

On Feb. 12, Betsy had also made a doctor’s appointment for that afternoon, possibly due to her own health concerns, but she never showed - an absence that later helped authorities reconstruct the timeline of her final hours.

Contractor’s Gut Feeling Leads to Tragic Discovery

The couple’s bodies were discovered after a contractor who regularly worked for Hackman and Arakawa grew concerned over their prolonged silence. The contractor hadn’t heard from them in nearly three weeks and initially assumed Betsy might be upset with him for revealing details about their work with the intensely private couple. After speaking with other associates who also hadn’t been able to reach the pair, the contractor contacted Betsy’s mother and requested a wellness check through the Santa Fe police.

Bodycam footage captured the contractor’s emotional exchange with Detective Joel Cano as he recalled the uncertainty he felt before the wellness check. “The whole time I’m thinking at work, ‘… Am I wrong about all this?’” he said, according to USA TODAY. “Am I going to show up there with two investigators and a state cop, and (Hackman and Arakawa) are going to come out and tell me, ‘What the h— are you doing here? … We’re sick, we got the flu, or something like that.’” Reflecting on the couple, he added, “I was close to them both, and they treated me like gold for 16 years. I’m major heartbroken over this.”

Desperate Searches

In the days leading up to her death, Betsy conducted frantic online searches related to COVID-19 and flu symptoms, indicating her concern over her health. She also purchased oxygen canisters, likely in an attempt to alleviate her respiratory distress. These actions suggest that she was unaware of the true nature of her illness and was desperately seeking relief.

Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare and deadly disease spread by rodents. Hackman, who was battling heart disease and Alzheimer’s, passed away about a week later, never realizing his wife had already died.

A Disturbing Scene Inside the Home

The Hackman’s Santa Fe home was found in a state of overwhelming disarray, with loose items, clothing, and food scattered across floors, chairs, and countertops. Shocking police bodycam footage captured the cluttered and unsanitary conditions inside, which authorities later described as a “breeding ground” for the hantavirus that claimed Betsy Arakawa’s life, according to the Independent.

When officers entered the home on Feb. 26, they discovered the bodies of Hackman, Arakawa, and one of their dogs, Zinnia. The footage showed Arakawa’s body lying near a bathroom and Zinnia’s crated remains nearby. Two other dogs were found alive - one of them appearing to “guard” Arakawa and described by an officer as “pretty friendly,” the Independent reported. The chaotic condition of the home painted a haunting picture of the couple’s final days, marked by illness, confusion, and isolation.

Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities that can accompany aging and illness.
